Exhibition: “Architects At Play” presented at Garagem Sul in Lisbon until January 30, 2022

Garagem Sul at Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon’s gallery dedicated to architecture, opens a Portuguese iteration of At Play on September 28, 2021. Initially presented at CIVA in Brussels, the exhibition is adapted to Garagem Sul and enriched with new works .

Architects at Play is an exhibition exploring play and the imagination, constructed experiences and mythological narratives. The exhibition is essentially centered on the idea of “Creating worlds”. He tries to bring together two characters: the architect and the child. Children’s games have always been fertile ground for the invention of ‘Worlds’. Likewise, architects are also imagining new “Worlds”. These worlds and the inventive mechanisms on which they are based constitute the heart of the exhibition, which tackles themes as varied as childhood and education, town planning, public space, history, architecture, art and creativity, in order to trace the history of imaginary as well as imagined “worlds”. Each of us is a playful architect. From the lonely hut to the cosmopolitan ark, we build worlds that we inhabit or coexist.

The world of play is situated in the mysterious interval which links our subjectivities to external reality. It sometimes happens that architectures crystallize in this ephemeral space, becoming for a time the scene of our lives, the horizon of our habits. This imaginary power is at the heart of the curatorial system where the playgrounds of childhood meet those of architects, artists and designers.

A journey through four playful universes: labyrinths, symbolic toys,
building games and strategy games — introduces many ways to create worlds.

Various works are also presented independently, without particular contextualization, placing us in a situation of discovery and wonder.
