Here’s a Gigabyte gaming laptop with a 4K OLED display and RTX 3080 for $ 1,799

If you’re in the market for a high-end gaming laptop, you might be tempted to pull the trigger on Gigabyte’s Aero 15 OLED. It’s yours for $ 1,799 after discount at Newegg, and as an added bonus it comes with Battlefield 2042.

Free to play or not, that’s a big discount. The MSRP is $ 2,999, which is a bit steep for the hardware, but it’s on sale for $ 2,299. It’s more in line with other laptops with the same GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, although the main one is the $ 500 discount. Yes, the mail-in rebates are a pain, but for $ 500 it is definitely worth printing the form and submitting it with the UPC cutouts and required sales receipt (I would even go with certified mail on this one ).

I often compare the prices to what Best Buy has to offer because the retailer makes it easy to sort by material and often has their own sales. In this case, the cheapest laptop in stock with an RTX 3080 is $ 2,799.99 (Razer Blade 14). Even among out-of-stock items, the cheapest is $ 2,199.90 (Asus ROG Zephyrus).

The caveat is that this is the low-end variant of Nvidia’s RTX 3080 mobile. Specs can and vary wildly between its laptop GPUs, and in particular this one, which can come in the form of 8GB or 16GB of GDDR6. It has 8 GB of GDDR6 and a boost clock at 1245 MHz. However, it also has a maximum rated power of 105W, which suggests that it may boost higher in some cases (the TGP range for the 3080 is 80W to 150W +) via Dynamic Boost.

Either way, it’s a fast GPU, and it’s paired with an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 11800H Tiger Lake processor. It is an 8-core / 16-thread processor with a maximum Turbo frequency of 4.6GHz and 24MB L3 cache.

The core components are balanced by 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, all of which combine for a full gaming laptop. It also comes with Windows 10 Pro.

Then there is the display. This is a 15.6-inch OLED panel made by Samsung, with 4K resolution and factory calibrated to be accurate right out of the box (X-Rite certified and Pantone validated).

You’re not always going to get 60 fps in 4K on this hardware, it just depends on the game (Notebookcheck offers a bunch of references for the 3080 mobile). Gigabyte has mainly gone for the higher resolution, as it targets creators and professionals who need more pixel space and accurate color reproduction.

It’s good for games and other things too, because our friends from T3 can attest in their examination. Simply put, while not cheap, this one is great value for money, as long as you might be bothered to ask for the refund.
