A do-it-yourself DAD doubled the value of his home by installing his own pool in the back garden.

Alex Dodman, 36, used YouTube tutorials to help him build the swimming pool for his house in Essex.

Despite the £10,000 price tag, Alex says it was worth doing the job himself, as professional installation could cost £12,000.

The Saffron Walden paramedic explained that the swimming pool was a dream project: “I had dreamed of having a swimming pool once the house was renovated, and I had even reserved a small plot to hopefully build it one day.”

However, the decision to start the huge DIY work was not made at the time: “I watched a video on YouTube during my lunch break showing someone building a swimming pool and on the same day I was on the phone hiring a mini digger.”

“I started building it in January 2020 and had dug the hole, but then Covid hit and couldn’t get anything material for ages.”

By building the pool himself, Alex saved around £2,000 and doubled the value of his Essex home

Alex described the pandemic break as “a bit of a blessing” as it meant he “started buying things [he] needed Facebook Marketplace which was much cheaper.”

The father-of-two has already found some fame for his large-scale DIY jobs and the value they add to his home.

He previously saved £75,000 by installing a gym and home cinema himself.

The project was hard work for a lone worker as Alex had to move six tons of subbase and add Astro turf around the pool and hand dig and pull bushes all by himself.

The whole process took over a year.

Crazy handyman Alex said: “I document a lot of my DIY around the house, from the kitchen to the home office, to the outdoor gym, the pizza oven and the construction of the pergola .”

The construction of the pool is the subject of an ongoing series on his TikTok channel, currently in 36 parts.
