An 8,000 square foot home in Delano has been declared the ugliest home in the west by an HGTV home improvement reality series.
The question now for owners “Lupe and Cruz” is whether the 1974 monstrosity will win the day. The ugliest house in America competition and $ 150,000 in renovations.
The miniseries is hosted by comedian Retta, who is best known for her roles in the NBC series. Parks and recreation and Good girls.
When the episode was filmed, the temperature was 102 degrees, far too hot for Retta, who grew up in New Jersey. In the opening scene, she describes Delano as “flat and hot”.
At first impression, “not so ugly”
After entering the house, Retta says, “I have to admit, it’s not that bad for me.”
But, after passing the entrance, she discovered the bad and ugly of a house that could have been used for scenes in a spaghetti western by Sergio Leone.
The dining room has an arboretum taken from a Holiday Inn in the 1980s. Except that a lot of the plants were dead and the waterfall was not working.
In addition to a garish kitchen on the ground floor, another full kitchen accompanied the master bedroom upstairs.
“I’m not sure that’s for sure”
Cruz bought the house without telling the other family members, who weren’t thrilled when they visited his purchase, it was revealed in Thursday night’s episode.
He had seen the house years before and had fallen in love with it. But, in a classic case of buyer’s remorse, Cruz now says “it’s too ugly”.
Indeed, Lupe, Cruz and their two children do not live there.
“I’m not sure it’s safe,” Lupe said.
Each episode includes a list of the characteristics of the house similar to a real estate ad. For the Delano house, it was:
- 8,000 square feet
- 4 bedrooms
- 3 jungles
- 2 kitchens
- 1 killing room
Retta said “kill room” like a punch line on the house garage.
The Delano house beat a converted barn near Sacramento and a house with nautical features in Pacifica to become one of the 12 national finalists. Besides being ugly, all houses seem to be money pits.
The series will crown the winner tonight (January 7).
