ST. LOUIS – A student leader – called a “senator” – at Washington University in St. Louis was caught removing miniature American flags from a 9/11 commemorative exhibit and putting them in bags like garbage.

In a video posted by Young Americans for Freedom, the student can be seen removing the flags and placing them in bags and then taking them away. A total of 2,977 flags were placed on the lawn representing each murder victim of September 11, Fox News reported.

The student who withdrew the flags on Saturday has been identified as Fadel Alkilani, vice president of finance for the student union. Although officials at the University of Washington condemned the action, they declined to say whether the student would be disciplined, according to student life, the university student newspaper.

WU College Republican member Nathaniel Hope filmed Alkilani removing the flags. He said the flags were taken down in “violation of school rules”. In addition, he said the student leader showed “no remorse” for his actions.

The school newspaper received a statement from Julie Flory, the university’s vice-chancellor for marketing and communications.

“We were disappointed to learn of the disruption of the September 11 signage on Mudd Field,” the statement read. “We condemn the interference in the expression of support of the Republican College for the victims of the national tragedy which occurred 20 years ago today.

Nick Rodriguez, president of WU College Republicans, called for Alkilani’s expulsion in a statement to Student life.

“At a minimum, I think it should be removed from both SU [student union] and his [resident adviser] position, what it means to be a leading American institution, and be represented by a student leader who has no respect for property, campus traditions or the memory of thousands of lives lost, ”Rodriguez wrote. “Today it’s about remembering the tragedy of 20 years ago to the day, not making a political statement. Any reason he can give to withdraw the flags, I find ridiculous.
